AMBASSADOR TO U.S. SAYS ‘NOTHING WILL BE CONTRADICTORY TO SHARIA LAW’
From “the more things change, the more they stay the same” department:
- Afghan Government (Taliban) persecutes Christians.
- U.S. removes Taliban from power – sponsors free elections.
- New (U.S. supported) Afghan government persecutes Christians.
What a difference a war makes. Or not. When asked by CNSNews.com whether Afghanistan should repeal its laws that make it a crime for Muslims to convert to Christianity, Afghan Ambassador to the United States Eklil Hakimi refused to answer the question directly, but he did say that while his country’s constitution provides for “freedom of religion”, it also says that “nothing will be contradictory to Sharia law.”
I may not be the sharpest knife in the Islamic drawer, but I have read Sharia extensively – including all of the fun little penalties for those who disobey it; ”freedom of religion” and “nothing will be contrary to Sharia law” are mutually-exclusive concepts, folks – period.
According to a State Department report on “religious freedom in Afghanistan” released last month: “Conversion from Islam is considered apostasy and is punishable by death under some interpretations of Islamic law in the country.” Damn, I’ll take “Interpretations of Islamic law that lead to death” for $100, Alex.
CNSNews.com asked Hakimi: “Regarding religious freedom, according to the State Department, at least two individuals had been detained in Afghanistan for converting from Islam to Christianity. Should Afghanistan repeal all laws that make it illegal to convert?”
Hakimi replied: “According to our constitution, there is freedom of religion. Meanwhile, it says that nothing will be contradictory to the Sharia law. So, while we step into those principles, we have to be careful because we are a very conservative society, a society that lives based on its faith.” Really, Eklil? You’re talking about the same “society that lives based on its faith” that rapes its children, mutilates its women, and stones its gays to death, right? Just checking.
Afghanistan’s constitution says that while Islam is the official state religion, “followers of other religions are free to exercise their faith and perform their religious rites within the limits of the provisions of law.” However, it also says that “no law can be contrary to the beliefs and provisions of the sacred religion of Islam.”
Another state document claims that adherence to the tenets of Islam “cannot be amended.” Head spinning? Me too. No wonder the Soviets couldn’t get anywhere with these people either.
Damn, the more these zealots contradict themselves, the more they sound like Democrats.
