‘You Never Want A Serious Crisis To Go To Waste’
The horrific tragedy of the Aurora Town Center movie theater massacre will impact hundreds, if not thousands of people for the rest of their lives. A secondary tragedy – although unmentionable in the context of this despicable event – will be the shameless and obscene exploitation of the shooting by those who seek political gain from its occurrence.
As Rahm Emanuel infamously said, “You never want a serious crisis to go to waste.”
We saw it in the immediate aftermath of the Gabby Giffords shooting as liberal commentators almost instantly branded Jared Lee Loughner a “right-wing fanatic.” (Ironically, classmates of Loughner later called him a “left-wing pothead.”) Was this instant label attached to Loughner because a Democratic Congresswoman was shot? Of course not. Was it because the tragedy in Tucson was seen as an obscene opportunity to gain political ground by everyone from the gun control crowd to Sarah Palin haters? Of course it was.
I remember listening to Barack Obama’s masterful Tucson speech and hoping he really meant it – wondering if his words would have an impact on those who choose vicious personal attacks and naked exploitation over civil discourse. Immediately following Obama’s speech, I wrote a post entitled I was Proud of my President Tonight, in which I not only praised the president for his compassion and the insight of his words, but also questioned whether we could truly choose a better, more dignified and respectful way to disagree with one another. I also wrote:
“The skeptic in me questions whether this can truly happen. The optimist in me hopes so.”
Unfortunately, Obama’s words ended up being just that – words. Within a week, he appeared on a Latino radio station and admonished Hispanics to work to defeat their “enemies.” Shortly thereafter, he stood at the Mexican border and ridiculed Republicans for wanting nothing less than “moats full of alligators” on that border. Many of the vile comments made by angry liberals about Sarah Palin – including death threats – were too graphic to include in this post.
Sadly, Barack Obama’s words quickly rang hollow. I fear we’re about to go through the whole disgusting nightmare all over again.
The optimist in me wants to believe that this time, things will be different. The pessimist in me knows they will not.

You read my mind, Rat. Aside from empathy and sympathy for those directly affected by this tragedy, my first thoughts were the repercussions for millions of Americans that were not involved. Again, my initial thoughts and prayers are for the innocent people shot and their families. God Bless Them and heal both physical and mental wounds. My next feeling was that this will be exploited to force more gun control and vilify the wrong people responsible for this horrible event.

What kind of sheep sit around in a theater for 15-30 minutes while a gunman kills 12 and wounds 50 more? There’s only one of him, take him down. Jeeez.

Maybe search turned up some “Fluke” contraceptive devices? Hot wired IUDs? A few Larry Flynt philosophical entreaties for porn? Who knows yet? It will be new media information as we learn…not from Homeland Security controlled media. Unless E.O, shuts down. Maybe watch Wolf Blitzer tonight with dental dam in mouth giving the news.

Yup, the Colorado scum is white, and the family probably has some money. This is going to be hyped by the left as a gun control issue. I think Obama made him do it. Barry made him feel as though he was not paying his fair share!

Like most issues, I think it’s just more complicated than our ubiquitous bumper sticker “Support the Second Amendment”. blah, blah, blah. When the Founding Fathers came up with the Second Amendment to guarantee a well “regulated” militia, did they really ever imagine this would someday give us the God given right to purchase AK-47′s and any other weapon of destruction our hearts desire? I kinda think they called them “amendments” because they amend. They were geniuses! They knew we would need “amendments” to fix mistakes and correct stuff we couldn’t possibly contemplate the future would bring. Then there’s this guy – Adam Gadahn giving terrorists the 411 on how to to easily buy firearms at American gun shows. I think most reasonable people on the left and the right (sshh – we do exist on both sides!) could probably sit down and work out a common sense solution to gun rights on the back of a napkin over dinner. Well, AK-47s, probably not. But they had no problem with artillery, explosives, etc. Within my lifetime you could walk in to a hardware store and buy dynamite.

Thanks, Rat. The thing is, in the early settlements in the Old Northwest, usually the richest man in town undertook to but at least a couple 6 pounder howitzers or so, in addition, of course, to his personal weapons.
It’s amazing to think back to those days, isn’t it? And also, to stop and realize how crimes far less heinous than the Aurora theater shooting shook America to its core, not so long ago.
Was thinking about the Clutter family murders the other day. (For those unfamiliar with the case, click here.) We have reached a point where crimes like the Clutter tragedy occur on a regular basis. We hear about them for a day or two – and then we move on. Sadly, it takes an event like Columbine, Ft. Hood or Aurora to truly shock America now. But then – guess what? – we move on.
The fault of guns? Of course not.
Nah, as we keep saying, guns are only a tool. Personally i think it’s moral relativism rearing its head. There’s no objective right or wrong, so draw the lines to please yourself.
It won’t work but, its where our ‘masters’ want to take us. It cheapens each of us.
